THE NAME ON THE TIP OF THE TONGUE

 A young woman promises a man that she will remember his name. One day, she can’t quite recall it. It tantalises her tongue. She is overcome with despair. This is first and foremost a fairy tale for adults. The leitmotiv,namely that the heroine must remember what will become “the name on the tip of her tongue”, expands the fairy tale to ponder our tongue, and its defects. Pascal Quignard dips deep into our culture to analyse those stupefying moments where we disappear into the inscrutability of language.
